  • Reference lists - use the reference list of a good article to find related articles.
  • Reliable journals - page through favorite journals to look for interesting articles & keep up with what’s going on. Goto libraries.
  • Popular press - less considered(MY INTERPRETATION)
  • Colleagues, professors and friends
  • Current Contents - a journal that consists of the table of contents of other journals.
  • Citation Index - a compilation of all the articles referenced by recently published articles; “forward reference”.
  • Compilations of Abstracts - like Current Contents; published less frequently, contain title & abstract & summary.
  • Computer searches
  • Web searches - web crawler

how to read papers

  • ead an article at least two, three, or four times.
  • For things you do not understand, they’re because:
    • Lack of adequate background.
    • Just too complicated.
    • Do not make sense.

Preparation:

  • Looking up points made in references.
  • Looking up in textbooks.
  • Looking up words in dictionaries.
  • Asking questions.

  • sufficient interest
  • relevance to the work
  • general importance
  • quality & accuracy
  • clearly written & accessibility
  • “meaty”
  • short

Suggestions to steps

Phase I: Screening the article

  • Read the title once for keywords; read slowly to make sense.
  • Judge the quality by author name.
  • Look at date.
  • Additional keywords.

Phase II: Getting the punch line

  • Read the abstract once fast for keywords; read slowly to make sense.
  • Read introduction. Easy & Informative in background.
  • References sited by introduction.

Phase III: First reading

  • Skim the abstract & intro to ensure adequate understanding of them.
  • Skim the methods section. Only need to be studied if you intend to use the procedures.
  • Read the results section.
  • Read the discussion.
  • Study the figures and tables.
